Make Your Uniqueness Your Superpower

Before a meeting in Italy, I asked a question I'm not proud of. The answer changed how I lead, permanently.

Being the only woman in the room almost made me cancel a meeting in Italy. What I heard next changed how I lead.

I was about to walk in to win a new transaction in Italy. Before I went in, I called the person running the business there and asked him a question I'm not proud of asking: "Is this going to be a problem? It's going to be a male-dominated room. Do you think being a woman puts us at a disadvantage here, should I send someone from my team?"

His answer changed how I think about difference, permanently.

"Ana, you don't understand. People are bored of seeing the same type of executive walk through that door. When a woman shows up fully in her power, making decisions, it's the most refreshing thing that can happen in that room. They'll enjoy the meeting more. And they'll be more likely to want to do business with you."

I went in. We had huge success.

But here's the part most high-performing women miss: it's not enough to simply be the only woman in the room. The advantage only shows up if you stop editing yourself to fit into it.

The moment you start softening, shrinking, or performing the room's version of "professional," you cancel out the very thing that made you different in the first place. Your difference only works as power when it's undiluted.

But unedited is only half of it. The other half is knowing, before you ever walk in, that you hold the power — the power to make the decision, to move things forward. That knowing isn't something you perform. It's something people feel the moment you walk in, before you've said a single word.

It's not about how you look. It's about whether you walk in fully as yourself — opinions intact, decisions intact, presence intact, power claimed — or whether you walk in quietly trying to blend into a room that was never built to reward sameness.

That room doesn't need another version of itself. It needs you, unedited, and in your power.

Lead with your whole self.
