The True Reason I Left Goldman Sachs

I didn't leave because I was exhausted. I left because I had already proved what I needed to prove.

Ana Estrada, former Goldman Sachs leader turned women's leadership advice writer, in a portrait for 'The True Reason I Left Goldman Sachs.

There is a sentence I never imagined saying after twenty years at Goldman Sachs.

I did not leave because I was exhausted.

I left because I had already proved what I needed to prove.

For two decades I pursued a silent obsession.

I wanted to answer a question almost nobody dares to ask:

Is it possible to achieve extraordinary performance without sacrificing yourself in the process?

Most people assume the answer is no.

I was surrounded by brilliant people who assumed that too.

But I never believed it. And I decided to turn my career into an experiment.

The first hypothesis was personal — if I created the conditions to be in my best physical, mental and emotional state, consistently over time, I would not just live better. I would perform better. Not on some days. For years.

The second was about leadership — great teams are not built by pushing harder. They are built by creating an environment where people want to give the best of themselves. Where high standards and humanity are not opposites. Where excellence becomes a consequence, not an obligation.

So I tested both ideas. From the inside. In one of the most competitive environments in the world. For twenty years.

And when I reached a level where I could have real leadership impact — something fascinating happened.

My business more than doubled its relative size within the broader European investment business.

My income tripled.

Every member of my team became a top performer and some of them said they would be willing to come to work without getting paid!

And while all of that was happening — I had more energy, more clarity, more presence. More sense of actually living my own life.

I was not surviving success.

I was enjoying it.

Those twenty years were never my destination.

They were my preparation.

All of it was building the woman I needed to become for what was coming next.

Don’t get me wrong — I loved my job. The people, the scale, the calibre of minds around me. But I was being called to something bigger.

What fulfilled me — what had always fulfilled me — was sharing what I had learned. With thousands of women.

Because transforming one team and business is powerful. But transforming thousands of leaders changes something much bigger than a business.

It changes families. Companies. Cultures. Entire generations.

That is why Majesta exists. Not as a second chapter. But as the true purpose of all the ones that came before.

And the irony?

I left more energised than I had ever been.

More experienced than ever.

With more ambition than ever.

At the point in my career when everything felt most effortless.

Because that is when you know. You are ready.
